Improving Safety and Performance on site: What is an Anemometer and why is it important?

Technological adoption within the plant hire and construction industries continually develops and largely revolves around improving safety and efficiency across sites in a

bid to tackle workplace accidents amongst workers. At GT Lifting, we know that these priorities are top of mind for our customers.  We are committed to providing our customers with the latest technology, helping them make safe, informed and smarter decisions across the UK.  That’s why we have increased our stock of advanced Anemometers systems, a tool for you to significantly improve site safety and operational efficiency.

What is it?

An anemometer accurately measures wind speed and direction. It has applications across many industries, including

Construction. Anemometers work by detecting the physical movement of air, such as mechanical motion caused by wind, and converting it into measurable data. This information is then displayed digitally, often wirelessly, giving operators real-time insight into wind speed and direction (Scarlet-tech, 2025).

At GT Lifting we have invested in Cup Anemometers, where the cups spin and are able to determine the speed of the wind, regardless of the direction of the wind. On lifting equipment like ROTO telehandlers, this information is critical.

Why is this so important?

Strong winds can affect load stability, especially when lifting heavy materials to significant heights. By monitoring wind conditions in real time, operators can make informed decisions to prevent accidents. Protecting those on site, and avoid costly damage to equipment or materials.

ROTO telehandlers deliver exceptional versatility and slew rotation. This is an incredible advantage that our ROTOS can give your site. However, they require the need for attentive and precise control of their surroundings. Knowing the external conditions in which they are operating in can ensure the operational safety of a project.

Real-time data helps operators understand their surroundings, allowing them to adjust how they lift, how much they lift, or whether they need to pause lifting operations.

So how does this benefit our customers?

The anemometers we provide enhance both safety and operator confidence. They give a clear understanding of external conditions, regardless of terrain or weather. Operators can handle lifts safely and according to best practices. This can enhance efficiency and ensure more productive days on site. They are a crucial tool that facilitates operators to perform complex lifts confidently, no matter the conditions.
